Sweet orange (Citrus aurantia dulcis) and bitter orange (Citrus aurantium amara) varieties belong to the family Rutaceae. The sweet orange trees are smaller than those of the bitter variety, with few or no spines and smaller fruit. Both have evergreen leaves and round fruit with a rough, thick orange rind.
